Northwest Coast Carvings
Carving is an ancient tradition among Northwest Coast Tribes. Houses, furniture, cooking and eating utensils, storage boxes, canoes, and many other objects were and are carved and painted with family crests, representations of ancestors, and supernatural beings. Masks and regalia are carved for social dances and spiritual ceremonies. Contemporary interpretations of traditional designs are produced for sale as decorative items. Northwest Coast Native art is sought internationally for its esthetic value.
